  143. MONKEYS OKAY: French animal rights association Aequalis said Air France
  144. Cargo had lifted its embargo, imposed in June 1997, on the shipment of
  145. monkeys from     Indonesia. 
  146.  
  147.      The embargo followed the death of a baby monkey in transit at the
  148. airport. It formed     part of a shipment of monkeys, destined for
  149. laboratory testing, transported by Air     France between Jakarta and Paris

  166.      HONGKONG -- Hongkong's killer "bird flu" aroused growing international
  167. concern     yesterday and US health officials urged increased spending
  168. against viruses. 
  169.  
  170.      So far the bug, which spread to humans for the first time this year,
  171. has killed one child     and one adult. More than half a dozen cases, two
  172. critical, are being treated or     observed. 
  173.  
  174.      To allay the fears, the World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday said:
  175. "The     likelihood of a pandemic has not yet been established." 
  176. It said in a statement: "Although human-to-human transmission is possible,
  177. at this stage     there is no confirmed evidence that such transmission has
  178. taken place. The results of
  179.      the intensified surveillance indicate that the H5N1 infection is not at
  180. epidemic level." 
  181.  
  182.      It was sending diagnostic kits around the world yesterday, but said it
  183. saw no need yet     for travel or quarantine restrictions.

  185.      Mr Andrew Yip, spokesman for Hongkong's Public Doctors Association,
  186. said doctors     were worried there might not be enough isolation facilities
  187. to treat large numbers of     patients. 
  188.  
  189.      Doctors sought advice on whether they would have to evacuate people if
  190. they could     not cope, he added. 
  191. Only one Hongkong hospital has a special infectious diseases ward, with
  192. space for only     20 patients. Another has set aside a similar-sized ward
  193. for isolation if needed.

  195.      In Washington, a senior health official, Mr Brian Atwood, said the
  196. "bird flu" was a     perfect example of where the US should target spending
  197. on infectious diseases.

  199.      The administrator of the US Agency for International Development
  200. (USAID) has     called in experts from the WHO, the Centres for Disease
  201. Control and Prevention, the     National Institutes of Health and private
  202. companies to ask how it should use a US$50
  203.      million (S$83 million) windfall allocated by Congress for spending on
  204. infectious     diseases. 
  205.  
  206.      "You can't just deal with these diseases when they reach our shore.
  207. It's only a day's flight from Hongkong to the US," he added.
